Apoptygma Berzerk
Short interview with Stephan Groth - November 2010

How are you and where are you at the moment?
We are on tour in Germany with Unheilig and Mono Inc. We are currently in Dusseldorf having a day off and finally had time to wash some clothes, catch up on sleep, and tonight we are going to a MGMT concert.

You have released a lot over the past years, which song is for you your all-time-favourite Apop song and why?
Each song has a special relationship to me, but at the moment "Back on Track" is my favorite Apop song. We are playing it live on our current tour with Unheilig, which has given me a new appreciation for the song.

You recently toured America. What was your most memorable moment there?
Playing the legendary SXSW festival was a great experience for us, and finally going to South America was also amazing.

Did you get any reactions on the new band members?
Yes, the new lineup works great!

Espen Ixtlan just published the fantastic photo documentary about Apop EVOLUTION HAS LEFT THE BUILDING ...thank God! You might have seen all the photos before, but how did you feel when you hold the book in your hands?
I really liked the idea of telling a story without any written words. I think Espen succeeded in telling a true behind the scenes tour story through his unique approach at photography. I was very excited when i saw the book the first time, It`s like reading a diary.

Is it different than a CD release? Why?
Yes, very different, because a picture is worth a thousand words.

The Rocket Science Tour 2009 ... The most important tour so far in the band history?
I'm not sure if it is the most important tour, but it was definitely very important and needed. I had to re-invent myself and the band in order to keep Apop alive.

You've recorded the concert in Cologne and your live DVD/CD "Imagine There's No Lennon" hit the stores some days ago.
Yes, and i`m very excited that it`s finally released. Producing this DVD took a very long time, but it was worth it :-)

"Imagine There's No Lennon"? What's the meaning of the title?
The title is taken from the song "Weight of the world", which is the first song on the Rocket Science album, and also the song that opened the Rocket Science tour in 2009. This is also a very important question that I am asking the Apop listeners. John Lennon was so important to music and pop culture, but equally important in his political views and because he chose to be very outspoken. I believe that John Lennon was killed because he was saying a lot of the same things that I am saying today. The tragedy is that when he was saying it, it was too early for the world to handle and understand.
Why did you choose the concert in Cologne?
We chose this show to film because we have a long history of playing live in Cologne, and have a lot of fans in this area.

There are a lot of "sold out" shows during this tour now in Germany. Did you expect this?
It is totally amazing, and we are extremely excited about playing for such a large amount of people every night.

Can we expect some further changes in the band line up or will it stay as it is at the moment?
The core of Apop is Myself, Thomas and Brandon. We have already been touring together for a year, and everything feels right.

Last but not least: how good is your German?
Well I did grow up with "Sesamstraße" ;-) My German is not very good but I do understand some of it if spoken without dialects and in a slow manner.
