For fans of dark electro, Mexico's C-Lekktor needs no introduction. For years, the project has grown to be the massive favorite it has become. We conducted this interview with Markko over the course of a few few months; during this time, we talked about the latest EP 'Tendencias Suicidas', the change in direction the project is taking, the band's first European tour, and the state of the dark scene in Mexico.
Last year you released the ‘Tendencias Suicidas’ EP- how would you say this latest release differs from your previous album ‘The Silence Procession’?
Markko: I think it’s more mature than our previous cd. The remix part also gave another view of our music- I mean, our songs with different ideas from other artists- it’s really wonderful to me… I am satisfied with the cd.
When we spoke previously you said you would be changing up the style a bit for the next CD- care to elaborate on that?
Markko: Yeah, I love different genres of electronic music: trance, psycho, DnB, hardcore, etc… So why not put other elements into our music? The next CD will be more instrumental songs in the style of ‘World of Fantasy.’ Sometimes songs simply sound better without voice, so our songs will keep the same formula but with a new touch and more danceable.
The band was featured on Worldwide Electronics volume 1 with [in]sekt's remix of 'World of Fantasy'- the track was much more hardstyle dance- is this a hint of what C-Lekktor has in store with the next release?
Markko: Yes, I got an invitation to be part of this compilation from Johan van Roy(Suicide Commando), but he wanted an exclusive track for it,so I decided to put the Mekanismo(now IN-seckt) remix,,because I think these guys are really good musicians; very young and his sound fits well with the sound we want to create for the new album. Definitely people need to look for this remix.
C-Lekktor recently went on its first tour of Europe. How did that go? Did the audiences responde well?
Markko: Hell yeah! The audiences were great,,people so nice to us, and the energy of the show was awesome- definitely was a a big experience for us; for sure we want to make it again. We also have some proposals to do some shows outside of Mexico so I will cross fingers to make it posible =)
You’ve been involved in the dark music scene in Mexico in one way or another since the beginning- what were the early days of Mexican dark electro and industrial like?
Markko: Well I have been involved in it 15 years or maybe more- don’t remember. I started as a DJ- at parties or concerts (very underground shows during that era), and to be sincere, the scene hasn’t changed that much since I’ve been involved. People come and go, but still being so underground this kind of music here in Mexico- yes, we have more people and more bands, but that doesn’t mean it’s good, because mostly the people are not really interested at all about this culture- they just wanna have fun, drink, and dance; but there are people that do as well.
In the past few years or so, the Latin America dark electro scene has risen to be a major contender in post-industrial music in general- why do you think this is?
Markko: Because there is a passion and huge creativity in their music- bands have all the potential to become bigger artists.
How would you say the current climate of the scene differs from the early days? Or is it the same?
Markko: I guess it’s a little better, but still so underground.
Do you have any advice or tips for aspiring industrial artists?
Markko: Yeah- just keep working and don’t desist on it… Make music for passion, not for being famous and everything will come slowly.
You are working on some remixes for Level 2.0 and Diverje- tell us a little bit about that...
Markko: You're right- we are working on these remixes and they're gonna be awesome... I love to work on remixes when the songs and artist like me,,its much more interesting and pleasant, also like level 2.0, because it's not much into harsh elektro,,and what can i say about the legendary diverje? I've been listening from a long time. So defi be cool remixes =)
One final question- what are some bands that really impress you and that industrial fans should be on the lookout for?
Markko: Mmmm, hard question… I love a lot of bands- older and newcomers, but if I have to name a few: God Destruction , [in]sekt- both from Mexico; Detroit Diesel from Cananda too.
Thank you so much, Markko, and good luck with C-Lekktor!
