From The Bogs of Aughiska

What’s the idea behind From The Bogs of Aughiska? Could you sum up the project in your own words for our readers?
With 'From The Bogs of Aughiska' I wanted to create music that is inspired by growing up in the wild west of Ireland and the countries rich History and folklore
You use a lot of samples of wind in your work. Where do you record them? It sounds like the wind at a beach to me.
The wind samples where recorded outside my house which is actually called ‘Crosswinds’ as the winds from the Atlantic Ocean meet the winds from the bogs and forest of Lisdoonvarna which results in the sounds you hear.
How do you create your music? What goes on in the recording process?
I have to be in a certain frame of mind to create FTBOA music but once I’m in the correct mindset the music production usually happens very quickly and most tracks are finished in an evening. I create my music using a sampler, keyboard and some software.
How have people reacted to your self-title debut?
The reaction so far has been incredible. I made this music for myself and didn’t expect so many people from all walks of life to appreciate it.
What’s the project’s following like locally? I can’t say it’s that good if you’re based in Lisdoonvarna and putting out dark ambient music!
Lisdoonvarna is a very unique place and the people in general are open minded. The reaction has been great from the locals from all that has heard the album so far.
One thing Irish avant guard bands have noticed is that they have to head abroad to get the recognition they deserve. Do you think that you will be many tours in Ireland?
Yes absolutely, I can’t see myself touring Ireland just yet as I want to get my live set up to scratch and the first few live dates I have coming up in The Netherlands and UK. I fell Irish people don’t appreciate their own unless they get recognition else where.
What other gigging plans do you have?
The first two dates will be in The Netherlands at the end of March playing alongside Aderlating on March 25th which is the noise project from Mories (Gnaw Their Tongues) who designed the FTBOA album artwork and the mighty Ulver on March 27th.
One criticism of concerts by some electronic bans is that they are written off as “one man and a laptop” affairs. How do you plan to avoid the problem?
The FTBOA live is going to be a full on sensory overload. I recently shot some footage around Co. Clare in very bleak weather with Simon Lucas who is cameraman on Most Haunted as well as drummer in Winterfylleth & Atavist. This footage will be shown along with the music so it won’t be a boring ‘one man and a laptop show’. There is also plans to get a full time band together in the future.
Do you find it difficult to promote your music in Ireland?
I wouldn't expect the mainstream press in Ireland to understand what I'm doing but the underground press has taken to the album very well and promotion has been very positive in Ireland so far.
What are the musical influences of From The Bogs of Aughiska?
My music taste is generally very extreme but I’m not influenced by anything musically when I create FTBOA as the main source of inspiration is the landscape of west of Ireland, history and culture.
You’re also taking inspiration from Irish legends and folklore. Which Irish legend interests you the most?
My favourite Irish legend growing up where the tales of Cuchulain but with FTBOA I want to explore the more obscure legends such as Máire Rúa and Biddy Early.
Any big plans in the pipeline?
I'm currently getting preaparing for the live shows in the Netherlands. I’m also going to be releasing a split picture disk vinyl with Dark Ages from the Ukraine. The theme is famine – expect some of the darkest music ever put to tape.
Anything else you’d like to add?
