LEGACY OF MUSIC - "[co]operation"

Release date: 22.10.2010

Rating: 8 out of 10

Whatever about fancy use of grammar in the album title, these guys know what they are at. Their brand of music is danceable without being too bombastic or overconfident and avant-garde without being too pretentious or lacking in appeal. They also sing in their native German as well, which is a very good thing to see as well and does make them worth investigating on that alone.

“Romance” kicks off with a crackling beat and moves while remaining somewhat sterile, but not in a way that detracts from the sound. “Seeking” spins and dances pre-programmed on the spot while whispering and droning, but has problems moving beyond its internal strife. “Count” was raised on the more mainstream of electronic dance floors, but does have a good amount of spirit and smarts to make it more then bland set list filler. “Sterne” is a strange creature, with German vocals instead of English (Which is standard for a lot of bands, which is a real shame) and revels in its artistry, happy to move about at its own rate. This is the kind of things electronic bands should aim for at least once in their careers. The fact that it’s so unique makes it a joy to listen to.

“Here I Stand” has both grandiose pride and solemn contemplation in its genes, which are not easy things to mix together, but moves back into “2 Steps” sounds like played down dance industrial, sweet but not very filling and could be a lot more ambitious. “Welt” returns with the German vocals with a beat from hip hop and very MIDI sounding treble that wouldn’t be out of place on a quality Amiga game. A joy fro those who enjoy retro gaming. “Fight” is straight upfront dance music while “Tragedy” is straight upfront languid synthpop that could have been made by the Pet Shop Boys with higher production values and a different style of lyric writing. The reverb does ad a very nice touch to it though. “Don’t Bother” tip-toes about in an understated manner while holding back in reserve and slowly pushing out into the spotlight. “Failure” is back in straightforward synthpop land. “Nasty” plods angrily along while “Feed The Fire 2010” wraps it all up, acting as something of a summary of the album, having both its danceability and willingness to play with sound.

It never forces itself down your throat and starts of well, even if it peters out towards the end and focusing more on dance oriented sounds. Still definitely worth checking out.
