Ad Inferna - "There Is No Cure"

Release date: 26.04.2011 | Label: Nialaihah Records

7.5/10

These guys have a certain love of wispy atmospheric openings when it comes to their songs, not to mention the samples of some very strange religious lines that are more in line with Crowley then Christ like a Fields of the Nephilim copycat band that took the Chaos Magick thing McCoy had a bit too seriously. These guys do love their foglike synths when it comes to start off, but discard it like a veil when they get down to the business of Electronic Body Music, the kind that for me evokes memories of nightclubs in Germany and Switzerland.

The album kicks off with “The Presence”, a quick atmospheric intro with plenty of gushing sounds and occult-sounding lines. “Angelik” introduces itself with some ethereal tips and launches into full dance industrial with vocals that sound like Nivek Ogre of Skinny Puppy fame at half speed and an octave higher. “Seventh Heaven” takes it’s time stretching and warming up before launching into a cold light display over a harsh beat, rasping at the shadows it creates. “Under My Skin” wastes no time in getting down to brass tacks and bringing excuses to move to the crowd while chanting the album title towards the end. “French Kiss of Death” would be lovely if we were talking about that character from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comics, but instead we’ve got some trance beats and for the first time on the album we get some female vocals to mix it about. Maybe Ad Inferna have been reading Gaiman. I don’t know.

“Stigma” rolls around gently then turns around with the momentum but not the force of a steamroller. “Sex Spell” really doesn’t sound like one, with zip-like electro sounds under impish vocals. “Resurrection” is light-footed and quick, somewhat Scooter-like in it’s desire to reach out to the clubgoers. “The One” keeps with the tune of the album but when you think it’s over it continues on with some of those ethereal synths they use to start songs.

The do have a certain wisps of style and panache about them but remain steadfast in their dedication to dance industrial. Whether that’s a good thing or not is something I’ll leave up to you.
