Very impressive. There’s a lot of Industrial rumbling and brooding (a la Nitzer Ebb) in this, and yet it remains very much a cold-wave album, emotionally distant, alien and yet rather enticing. Think Xenos & Oaklander or Clan of Xymox. While not all that approachable on the first listen, the album does become more enjoyable the more you get to know it, like the company of a shy individual.
“You” sounds somewhat like an industrial New Order, one stripped down for maximum industrial noise. “Perfectly Dead” leans towards the more accessible and Europop, but still remains cold and calculating. “The Voice” is some proper synthpop reminiscent of the Pet Shop Boys both in sound and dour attitude but not in lyrical complexity. “Radio” starts pounding and making moves to the dancefloor in a trance and going on about the importance of supporting independent music in a way that doesn’t feel the slightest bit like a guilt trip.
“Square Moon” is a rebuttal to the thought process of a lot of alternative music with modern female R&B vocals combined with 16-bit scratches that move with the repetitive rhythm of machine pistons. “Square Moon” sounds like someone’s having a lot of fun kicking a garbage lid repeatedly and distorting the sound over and over for the right sound while the rest of the band are going through a very morose time putting words to sound. “Clear Mind” is restive and rather content but does bring in some very interesting percussion over the controlled keyboards. There’s something strangely addictive about the treble notes of “Where It Ends” that makes it one of the best tracks of the album, and “At Night” is very sombre and contemplative, bringing back memories of going through cities rambling to yourself in exhaustion at crazy hours and the clubbing that occurred moments before.
There are a lot of people you could recommend this album to. Music elitists who complain “Industrial’s not what it was” will be glad to know that there’s something here to please them. Fans of 80’s synthpop will surely get a kick out of this, provided they can appreciate sounds a shade darker then what they’re used to.
