Javelynn was formed in late 2008 when singer Yasmine Uhlin left Ashbury Heights and started her own band with guitarist Johan Anderson. In mid 2009 Elle joined as keyboarder and co-programmer. In mythology the “Chimaera” is a fire breathing monster with the heads of 3 animals and has come to describe any mythological animal with parts taken from various animals. The cover of the album shows the 3 band members – is this the living, breathing Chimaera? The name is also relevant in that Javelynn’s music combines so many elements into one cocktail of pop, disco, new wave, punk and electro. They mix dance beats and synths with hardcore/metal guitars. Provocative lyrics with pop melodies. The album is full of energy and catchy tunes.

For fans of Ashbury Heights the last song “Crisis” was written by Yaz and Anders Hagstrom before she left the band. Yaz didn’t want to song to go to waste so we are treated to it on this album. Anders contributes with background vocals and harmonies. First on the album is “Wannabe” an instant sing along, pop song, with catchy guitar riffs. The perfect song to start a new band, new album, new you. Yaz’s voice is amazing. At times there is something a bit “Sophie Ellis Bextor” about her lyrical style. Especially in the bouncy, poppy “Morphine” with its fun catchy lyrics. This is one of my favourites.

My other highlights are “Die Young” – guitar driven, synths, fast. The ultimate party you throw before you die young and very happy. “Beat You” is another fast, dancy one. Almost Europop. For any of you who know what I’m talking about I’d like to see this in Eurovision – 12 points! “La Fin Absolute Du Monde” is heavy poprock with its catchy synth. Also for those of us who like our pop a bit heavier (if there is such a thing?) “Infinity” has a heavy bass line and once again – how many time can I write this? – catchy guitar riffs. “This Song Is Not about You” is darker, more intense. A bit hypnotic.

I was least impressed with “Oh Dear” – I remember drum machines and synths but that’s about it & “Skip a Heartbeat” started off more interesting than it went on. I wasn’t fussed on the singing style on this one – it was a bit monotonous for me, the tune was definitely better than the vocals. I really enjoyed this album. I am impressed and would love to see them play live. Yaz has said she wants to tour, but was waiting for the release of the album first, So hopefully they will be on the road soon. My advice? - go see them. Yaz’s advice? – “Buy the album – Try not to sprain your neck while listening to it”.

Word of the review – “Catchy”
