Wow, this sounds like a real 80’s album. Low key, crackling synth high on treble and distorted vocals (Think Alien Sex Fiend, Skinny Puppy or The Cemetary Girlz for the right pitch) and a very strong Cure influence buried among the chords. So we aren’t wondering too far from familiar territory when we put this on the stereo.
“Enigma Kaleidoscope” twinkles like the early night sky over the seaside. “Little Lost Soul” is two thirds eighties synthpop to one third Darkwave. “Alone” crackles away and doesn’t sound as lonely as it leads you to believe. “A Return to Darkness” has a certain Cure bassline and sounds like a tune for a summer evening. “Today Is Yesterday” is a downer soundwise and I can’t tell if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. “You Shine On” keeps its hopes high as it is a love song. “The Translucent Track” brings in some rhythm guitar and melodica, and this makes all the difference as this one is a standout number with proper indie rock roots.
“Epica II” really doesn’t sound all that epic. “Magic Star” brings the post-punk home while hitting the high notes. “Without Your Feeling” is another love song that sounds like it belongs on a wedding soundtrack but has a few creepy undertones to it. “In The Stars” reminds me of early- to mid-nineties Electro-Goth and Goth rock. “Lovesong” is a great Cure cover and “Ocean” brings a certain touch of Trip-Hop and Hip-Hop. Very cool. “The Things I Saw” is cold and machinelike, with some influence from old school industrial bands. “Epica” isn’t very epic either and just rattles and rambles on. “Helium” reminds me of an early Depeche mode playing around with keyboards trying to capture the sublime. Interesting end to the album though.
There’s enough here for two different albums on this release and there would still be tracks left over. What we have sounds incoherent and disorganised, lacking something to aim for. There are a number of moments here, even if some aren’t the most memorable.
