Maybe it’s just me, but this really isn’t that great. I’m not really a hardcore fan, having had some bad experiences at hardcore gigs and the people who go to them but then again I am prejudiced. Having said that, this album is not one I could enjoy. I couldn’t make out the lyrics; there was little variety between the songs and the same thrashing of stringed instruments that goes with hardcore, almost invoking the stereotype of rock music being “the same three strings played in the wrong order”.

“The Worst in Me” opens with a sinister tone, but then launches straight into hardcore screeching and hard guitars. “GNF” tones things down a bit, but not so much as to appear “unmanly”. “No Hope” takes some influence from the nu-metal bands like Linkin Park in its more sombre moments but for the rest it rips things to shreds. “You Won’t Be Missed” is much more cynical starting out but grows more morose as it goes on. “Faithless Living” is upset over something, but it’s hard to tell as all the other songs sound upset over something as well. Someone really needs to cheer these people up. “Your Existence” gets its treble up as it doesn’t distort the guitars by half.

“Trophy Child” beats things hard. “My Own Grave” swings and sweeps along at the band’s typical break-neck price. “Something To Live For” suffers from something akin to existential angst rather then the regular kind. “Real Talk” introduces to audible swearing as it rages about the fraudulence of some people. “Praise Feeder” has that weary feeling a lot of album enders have, one of accomplishment and that it’s time to bring things to a close.

There’s something in here for Sum 41 fans alright and anyone who enjoys heavy metal or hardcore will certainly like this, but it just doesn’t do much for this reviewer.
