Liquid Grey - "Grey Matter"

Release date: October 21st, 2011 | Label: Echozone

9/10

Hear the drums crackle like an assault rifle!! Lose yourself in the swirly, distorted bass!! Savour the nimble footed guitar, never happy to just stay on one note!! And while Liquid Grey may be rock and certainly have good goth credentials, they wouldn’t be a straightforward goth rock group. Instead, they take on a lot of different influences then just the big three of goth rock (The Sisters of Mercy, The Mission and Fields of the Nephilim) and really do love their guitar solos. This makes for a fresh, fluid sound while at the same time will strike a few chords with veteran rock fans.

“Everything that Kills” was born to cruise down highways on Summer evenings with the roof down and the shades on. “I Never Smile” (Trying too hard to be goth, are we?) moans into the microphone as it broods over its unhappiness. “Red” has the beat and treble of The Cure on a day after a good day. “In Black” despairs with a wonderful atmosphere as the notes come down like heavy rain. “Low” sounds like a Cure song that did its thing by way of “Part of Everything” is one for fans of solid prog-rock and Dyonisis. “Fire” is from the mouth of an arsonist with self-destructive tendencies. It’s not committed yet, but it’s too fond of posing to lash out. It does posing very well though, so you can’t fault it.

“You” lets the bass do the talking as it keeps its head low as it has something important to say and say quietly. “Darkened Skies” walks the line between despairing and vicious loathing at the face of a fraudulent adversary and betrayer. “Lines” shows its love for hard rock with wailing guitars and gruff vocals that’s both beautiful and catchy. “From Dusk To Dawn” is a subtle vampire song, in that it doesn’t overtly say it’s a vampire song, which is the enjoyable kind of vampire song. Very catchy beats as well. “No Time” gets out the guitar solo (These guys love guitar solos) as it contemplates how life’s too short to lay down and cry. “The Lost Son” is a weary creature in need of rest and ends on a tired note in true goth rock fashion.

It does pay homage in the details of the greats of the game, but Liquid Grey knows what they are doing and where they are going. Definitely a band to watch in the future.
