If you’re not careful, this one is going to grow on you. While it’s not the harshest and hardest of EBM, minusheart’s second album is still hard enough to raise the eyebrows of rivetheads who consider themselves fans of “proper” industrial (“proper” industrial is something I’ll leave for the academics to define.) and yet remains open and accessible to the larger music buying audience. As there’s no bleepy or cheesy elements in the mix and the beat is kept at a steady pace a lot of the weaker club DJs will dismiss as “music you can’t dance to as it’s too slow” but the rest of us can savour at our own leisure at home or in licensed venues.

“Inglorious Bang” stamps and bangs away over corrugated iron. “Drawback” moves with the consistency of a young man who makes every step known to the people around him. “Break Out” is the offspring of a proper rock song and an industrial track in a good mood. “Book Of Love” is a modern 80’s synthpop track that will ease a wounded heart that’s tuned into electronic music. “Peak Of Pleasure” really rocks out over the distorted synths. “Lost One Minute” is remorseful and not at all a friendly creature as it angsts and grieves for what it had. Perhaps someone should put on “Book Of Love” to cheer it up.

“Don’t Call It Love” is an angry thing, but it’s the dry anger with which we won’t be seeing the fangs or claws if we keep our distance. “Electric Heartbeat” really gets to the soul of the machine and yet remains friendly and bubbly enough not to alienate people with it’s exploration of the cold and sterile. Possibly one of the best tracks of the album in my opinion. “Morphine Waltz” feels acidic and confused, but it knows where it’s headed. “Ride On Your Colours” hits all the high notes in optimism. “Solitaire” is a superb number that keeps everything in control with calculated efficiency but at the same time shows it’s artistic, emotional and charismatic soul to the world and you can’t help fall for it. “I Don't Think That The Sun Goes Down” repeats itself to the point of hypnotism as it slowly winds down for the night but shows that it still has some energy to burn away by finishing the party.

If you can imagine a Marilyn Manson who’s been better trained as a vocalist and musician doing something along the lines of old-school EBM and harsh 80’s synthpop, then you’re not far off picturing minusheart.

Great music, no matter how your tastes run.
