If Goth Metal and the darker shades of Rock have become big in Europe it’s easy to see why with this release. In between powerful, bombastic synths, distorted but by no means abrasive guitars and solid musical talent that doesn’t stray too far into the unfamiliar, there’s definitely an appeal to a larger audience. And this is all too apparent Spain’s own Nox Interna and their new album, The Seeds of Disdain.

After a sinister “Prelude”, we get straight down to brass tacks with “Pray” which swerves about but keeps its control. “Our Last Song” (And yet it’s only the third track in the album) comes down like hard rain and maintains its Euro-rock spirit. “Rechazo de Sueno” shows real Spanish blood with keyboards and guitars that sound like they could have come straight from the soundtrack of a Castlevania game. “Misery” could sound more miserable but instead it opts to take the fast, steady beat. “Born Under Saturn Sign” tones things down at every point except the chorus, which takes a somewhat classical and emotional turn.

“Abismo” sweeps about in its own sanguine way that it can be easy to lose track of its tone. “I’m Sick” sounds strangely reminiscent of Bon Jovi, albeit with a gothic touch and Spanish vocals. “Too Sweet” tries to get creepy, but instead comes of as the jealous type. “El Lobo Estepario” has some excellent effects, but overall does little to take the attention. “1984” (George Orwell reference! Nice!) makes up for its predecessor’s indifference by going bombastic and ballistic with some quality string arrangements to boot. “Victory of Love” has that superb shaking synth effect from Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” and is a wonderful piece of synthpop all round. “Seeds of Disdain” wraps it all up nicely for the album, summing up the main sound and keeping the attitude right.

Not the most challenging or experimental music, but still a well toned and refined album that will go down well at a party or on a DJ set at your local Metal bar.
