Loops. Loops. Loop de Loops. These guys love looping their sound. Maybe it’s just me, but these guys repeat and repeat their music without it getting repetitive, which shows how talented they are, to keep things going.
“Nu Control” gets off to an experimental start with a steady beat, zip line treble and robotic distorted vocals all put in a loop with more and more added every few passes. “The Day I Die” loops some more, trying to get into a proper party mood but can’t decide between being serious and reserved (Which it can’t do) and being coolly detached from everything (Which it can do). “Bionic” finishes the stretching and gets into a proper forward dance movement that’s not too fast but still a great mover. “Demons” tries to play it smooth, but it doesn’t have the attitude right and comes off as if it could be making a better effort and just not doing as well as it could be.
“S.O.S.” sounds like a proper late eighties/early nineties dance track in that it moves quickly but at the same time at a leisurely pace and keeping its own rhythm. “No Way Back” calmly tries to stir up some panic while “The Fourth Way” plays with samples and works its way through a nice little spin. “Paris in the Twentieth Century” reminds me of Daft Funk as it paces up and down city streets, letting its feet hit the pathways noisily.
“Anima” brings in some Red Hot Chilli Peppers guitar for starters as the tempo builds, and then smoothly glides downwards and across a nice calm rate. “Crawl (Feat. Gary Numan) takes tips from Nine Inch Nails and hints of eighties electro, so it’s one for all the goffs and industrial fans out there. “Society of the Spectacle” is a proper ambient track that plays by its own chaotic, nonsensical rules that make it the crown jewel of the album. The Moth (Feat. A Place to Bury Strangers) is subdued down tempo affair with speeding lights on its left and right that is a great way to wind down the album, one that lets us know that the end of a good thing is coming, and it is time for it to pass.
There’s more intelligence then there seems under the surface of the electro loops that becomes apparent as time goes one, so this is one to watch out for.
