VNV Nation - "Automatic"

Release date: September 16, 2011 | Label: Anachron Sounds

8/10

This album has been described as an “"Opus of Retro-futurism” by the band, and listening to it, it really does come through. If this is a concept album, then they’ve left the theme mercifully vague as one flaw with the concept album is that a number of songs can feel forced to fit the theme when they should flow naturally. But the fathers of Futurepop aren’t going to worry about it here.

“On Air” is a superb mix of radio sounds and piano that would make a great component of a fine art installation worth of an Arts grant. “Space & Time” sounds like it came straight from Top of the Pops back in the 80’s with an appropriate musical video. “Resolution” sounds rather positive and lingers between interesting and somewhat memorable. “Control” takes an aggressive stance, and you can’t tell if it’s going to act pre-emptively or not. “Goodbye 20th Century” is an inspiring ambient arrangement that has the glow of nostalgia and is perfect to listen to as the sun rises on a clear day.

“Streamline” brings us more synthpop as it reflects on the future and what is to come. “Gratitude” takes a rocky edge and incorporates tribal drumming in its work as a tribute to parents and mentors. “Nove (Shine A Light On Me)” is something that sounds like a 90’s dance track played at half speed and a solemn moment by a veteran goth band that’s all too fond of the synthesisers. Sublime in its own way and one of the best tracks of the album. “Photon” breaks out the oontz-oontz beat and the fanfare keyboards and while it’s initially impressive, it gets tired and pretentious after a while. “Radio” follows the VNV tradition of driving dancefloor percussion combined with soulful and elegant backing keyboards. And so it comes to a close.

It certainly has a lot going for it in between its fresher tracks and the more experimental pieces, short though they may be, but I can’t help but feel they’ve been rethreading old sounds and, with them, old glories. Still, it’s a good album as the talent and effort comes through and you could probably do worse things with your money.
